Control EPS mode?

Post by Mouton »

I have an AIO G1 with Gateway. Is it possible to add the ability to set the EPS mode on or off via the app? Currently the only way to do this for me I think is via the Giv portal / remote control. As we all know Giv the company are in lots of trouble and the software arm are struggling for a business model.

It would be nice to have the ability to access this setting in case of ever needing to reset it if there is no Giv portal any more.

Thanks

Sure, if only I knew which register it is.

I don't have an AIO so I don't have that setting on my system.

Could it be register 115? If you press the inverter line on the main screen, in the status box at the bottom there is island. Could that be it? I have never known what it is supposed to do. If you turn it on/off in the portal does that change?

Otherwise when you change it on the portal, does the portal record anything in the history log? What does that say, it might give a clue?

Out of interest, what does EPS mode do? It sounds like the sort of thing you set once and leave alone.

I’ll have a look at your tech questions more in the morning and get back. I work in IT so happy to get technical to find stuff out for you to help us all.

If I understand correctly EPS is emergency power supply, so in an AIO with Gateway setup it’s this setting (Enable EPS which is only visible in inverter remote control of the AIO in the web portal) that enables and disables the (whole) home backup in case of grid failure.

Indeed it’s a set once and leave for me. But if ever it gets reset or reverted by some glitch, I’d never be able to re-enable it (assuming I’m not paying the 4.99 a month forever, and if Giv software don’t survive), making 25% of the reason I bought it useless. Others may want to be able to control, or for when sparks are working (although I guess the AIO could just be shut down).

Quick try tonight - toggling Enable EPS in the portal and indeed the Island info for the AIO in your app changes from on, to off, and back. Nothing looks to reference the setting in the Gateway, nor does the Gateway record any writes, so it looks like it’s only in the AIO.

Excellent. I will put it into the next release and call it "EPS Islanding". Don't think it actually does anything on my system (with a changeover switch).

Just for info. On my gen1 with fast response firmware 191/193 I also have this button in the settings, and switching it on and off is shown in the history with changing to 'true' or 'false', depending on whether switching on or off initially.
Tapping on the Inverter in your app, Island is always shown as 'off' whichever way the button is placed. Whether that's because I've never connected anything to the EPS terminal on my inverter I don't know.
I had a vague feeling that only the installer or GE can switch on EPS, since it needs to be wired up right with the correct earthing rod or earth connection, so it didn't feed back into the grid in the event of a fault whilst a power cut was happening. It may be I'm remembering that with the original firmware 405?, where there wasn't a switch in the settings, but in any event the on/off slider doesn't appear to change on your app on my system. It just shows 'off' even though I have the portal button 'on'. One of these days I'll have to connect a socket to it, to check if it works.

Looking in the new App from GE software, they have helpfully quoted the register numbers

Both are exposed and settable in local mode. Yet to test anything.

Enable EPS is showing as register 317 on my AIO
Enable 0s EPS countdown (for the UPS-like behaviour?) is register 177

Yes, register 115 isn't in the direct control list. That doesn't mean much, maybe it doesn't do anything, or maybe it's intended only for installers.

On my system:
I have register 115 off. I tried turning it on and it didn't seem to make any difference.
I have register 177 off. Not sure what it does and have never tried turning it on.
I only have 180 registers, so I don't have a register 317.

If anyone can find out what they do, I can add them to my app on the Advanced tab.

Hi RubikCube

Sorry if you already tried/knew. In my new (free GE App) if I go hamburger, Direct Control, if shows me lots of settings including the register numbers by each one. Using this on my AIO1/GW1 setup...

115 - not listed
177 - not listed

Its a bit laborious but I could go through the whole set for both AIO and GW for you and list them like this if you would like it?

My setup is generally set to - Eco mode, timed charge overnight 23:31 to 05:28. Max charge rate 4.7Kw, Max discharge rate 6KW. No reserve set beyond the 4%. No battery heating. Single AIO. Instant UPS/EPS. Registers with current values

20 - Enable AC Charge Upper % Limit - Off
27 - Enable Eco Mode - On
31 - AC Charge 2 Start Time - 00:00
32 - AC Charge 2 End Time - 00:00
44 - DC Discharge 2 Start Time - 00:00
45 - DC Discharge 2 End Time - 00:00
50 - Inverter Max Output Active Power Percent - 100%
56 - DC Discharge 1 Start Time - 00:00
57 - DC Discharge 1 End Time - 00:00
.....
There's quite a lot more of them, but happy to help if useful.

By the way I think 177 is now not visible in the latest version of that GE App

We don't need a list of register numbers. The list in the GE app is not far off.
Of course, GE software have no more idea what the registers actually do, than we have.

My system has 180 registers (numbers 0 to 179) but I can still see the same as everyone else in the GE app, just none above 179 work.
As I understand it, your AIO and gateway have 360 registers each, so the ones that might relate to power outages (115, 177, and 317) might need setting (or not) on either the gateway or the AIO. That makes 64 combinations! I haven't a clue what settings are best for you.

Seeing as you mention Register 50 - don't touch it !!
The documents I have state as follows
Register 50 - Active power
Register 51 - Reactive power
Register 52 - Power Factor.
Unless you understand this https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AC_power
Leave well alone.
